OMOYA Soryo is a private retreat nestled in the satoyama landscape of rural Japan, where a sense of stillness and continuity remains.
Here, the sounds of nature are often the only sounds you hear. In the clear air, time seems to move at a gentler pace.
Botanist Yukitoshi Ito once visited this area and was deeply impressed by its natural environment. He left us with these words:
“A place that is good for plants is also a good place for people.”
This house was built nearly 300 years ago and has been cared for across generations. It is also the house where the owner’s father was born and raised.
While preserving the essential structure of the original building, the aim was not simply to preserve the past. Instead, the house has been thoughtfully renewed for contemporary living while respecting its history and character.
Every aspect of the renovation—from the layout and flow of the spaces to the choice of materials—was carefully considered so that the house could continue to serve as a place for everyday life rather than a relic of another era.
Different generations have lived here, each leaving their own traces behind. The result is a place where time is felt not as something distant, but as something quietly present.
As this house begins a new chapter, we hope it will continue to welcome people for generations to come, offering a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the enduring rhythm of satoyama life.
